Cassina Reproduction Furniture

Seriously.
I want one.
I first happened upon this chair design in the "relaxing room" of the spa at the Four Seasons Resort in Carlesbad, CA. I thought the design was a Jean Michel Frank. He was the one who designed the club chair as we know it:

Which I actually also adore. But these, with the metal frame and delicious cushions on all sides, were a little different. Upon further inspection, Le Corbusier was the mastermind behind this "LC2" chair. (He named all his furniture in this way and interestingly collaborated with many other Bauhaus school architects and designers to produce his famous pieces.) First designed in 1928, I found the dealer, Cassina, who makes authentic Le Corbusier reproduction furniture. You can't buy them online, instead you have to call for a brochure, so I'm sure it's a pretty ridiculous penny.

Makes me want to sprawl across an afternoon with an F. Scott Fitzgerald book and an open window.
Maybe I'll win the next Fantasy 5 line in the lottery, or I could just get really good with a sewing machine and a welder.. :)

Loving Linoleum

Linoleum. The misunderstood flooring that is not used very widely anymore and reminds everyone of this:

Fake. Gross. Old-Fashioned. Probably full of nasty chemicals that we used to be oblivious to. Right?

Wrong!

Seems that for once, something that was widely used in American homes in the 1940's won't give you cancer. Hooray!

Linoleum is a all natural, very green, biodegradable flooring made of ground cork, wood flour, linseed oil, gum, mineral filler and resin. It's mixed and poured onto jute or burlap, and viola, a flexible, natural, noise absorbing flooring!

Nowadays, the United States doesn't even manufacture this stuff anymore. We're apparently too busy giving people plastic poisoning producing vynl. We can import it though, from Scotland or Holland. They seem like cool countries.

I am floored (hehheh) when I think of how this awesome flooring has been pushed aside. I think we should start a linoleum resurgence revival. Of course, there are a couple disadvantages: it will bubble under standing water, it's not a fan of humidity, it doesn't like to be put on top on concrete because concrete is acidic...but these are small prices to pay for your overall health, especially considering that these problems can be easily avoided with an extra layer of underlying burlap and a water based or wax sealer. Brilliant.

 

 

 

 

 

 

"I Want That!"

When I was little, everything I saw garnered a little shriek of "I want that!". To this day, my family won't let me live it down, so I've decided to embrace it and publish a weekly "I want that" blog. Some items, like this week's entry for instance, are a total splurge. Some will be budget friendly. Either way, you'll probably want it too. ;)
